Hello Mr. Julius.
Is there a common “stoner survival kit” or something? Like the things that every smoker should have in his posesion [sic]? Thanks.
To my knowledge, no, there is not. That doesn’t mean, however, that there aren’t some things that are handy to have around. Most cannabis users have some sort of “kit” that they’ve put together over the years — but as far as I know, there’s no “common” kit.
Personally, I’d recommend some of the following to smokers:
A Swiss Army knife. Need to scrap the resin from a bowl? Cut up a big bud? For many, a Swiss Army knife is an indispensable tool. The little slide-out tweezers make a damn fine roach clip, and the little scissors work great for cutting up a bud for rolling. The toothpick makes a good “poke” (for pushing excess plant material into a joint/spliff/blunt.) There are probably more uses that I haven’t thought of, but nevertheless, a tool such as this is quite useful to a serious smoker.
A roach clip. If you don’t have the above, then you should probably have a standard roach clip in your kit. They’re useful, especially when trying to smoke every last bit of a spliff. In a pinch, they can help scrape the resin from a bowl, giving you a more or less “free” smoke with some serious gravitational stoning ability (resin’s fun like that.)
A windproof lighter. Windproof lighters are useful for two reasons: first, they’re windproof (duh.) Secondly, they provide a much hotter, much more consistent flame than traditional Bic-style lighters — this is useful when smoking damp weed (such as that produced by some indoor grows), or when smoking out of a hard-to-light piece (such as a one-hitter with a small bowl.) The wind-resistance isn’t necessary for most people — but when you live in a damp, windy climate, you start to appreciate the virtues of such a lighter.
A couple plastic bags. Whether it’s storing your bud, or saving half-smoked joints for later, a plastic bag can come in handy. Zip-loc bags have the added advantage of being (mostly) airtight — an important consideration if you’d like to keep your buds fresh (or if you’d like for the odors of a half-burnt joint not to saturate everything.)
A spare pack of rolling papers. Whatever your favourite brand is (Chills, Zen, Rizla, or what have you), you will inevitably find yourself half-stoned, ready to roll another spliff — only to find that you’re out of papers. This is not a good situation — so avoid it by keeping an extra pack on hand at all times. As soon as you open it, buy another to put in reserve (keeping this as a strict “house rule” prevents the inevitable “Oh man… I thought there were more” moment.)
Some extra tobacco. Tobacco tends to burn a bit more evenly than marijuana — so it’s good to keep some on hand for those times when your stash is extra-dank, and you’re having trouble rolling a good smoke. Don’t smoke tobacco? No problem — there are a variety of other even-burning herbs that can be used as mixers. I’m a fan of Dagga myself, but there are a ton of herbs out there that you can use. The rule still holds true though: keep some extra on hand in case you’re stuck with some dank weed that needs a mixer.
An el-cheapo piece If you don’t smoke from bowls/bongs/etc, then skip this one. If you do, then it might be a good idea to invest in a cheap piece as a backup. A suitable pipe can be as little as $15 at some headshops, and having a backup means that you’ll be able to smoke even if careless friend breaks your favorite piece. Having a cheap piece is also useful for smoking in situations where you might not want to break out that hand-crafted, extra special custom bowl (such as at a party, when traveling, etc.) Lastly, a cheap pipe ensures that you’ll always be able to smoke, even if you do run out of papers (see above.)
